Averagely, people are slouched when using the phones starting from 2-4 hours per day. In extreme cases it can even be up to 10 hours! That bad posture has both short and long term damages for the spine, stated Surgical Technology International Journal.
The adult head average weight is 10-12 lbs and that is the same pressure for the spine when you tilt and slouch or when you have good upright posture. To tilt the head several times increases the pressure and this is bad.
The study added that 15 degree head tilt makes the stress bigger for 27 lbs. tilt of 30 degrees is 40 lbs. tilt – 45 degree is 49 lbs and more is even 60 lbs! The scary fact is that everyone tilts the head for 60 degrees while texting!
The MD, Kenneth K. Hansraj, spine surgery chief of New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine, and also author of the same study, affirmed that this movement is awful for the spine. It causes sharp neck pain, burdens the muscles and tendons and ligaments suffer too.
But, you can still text and use the social networks with small healthy changes. The experts advise to try hold a good posture i.e. shoulder blades and shoulders are aligned and the back is neutral. This will feel uneasy at first for the arms when you try to lift the phone high, but all gadgets have small weight so nothing to worry about.
